Best of Seven Game Series Tied 3-3

The Braves failed to wrap up their series and in the process, they were now forced to play a winner take all game seven.  The offense was held to a mere four hits by Yankees starter Bob Turley and while the Braves bullpen threw a decent game, it wasn’t good enough.

The Yankees drew first blood in the third inning on a two run homer by Yogi Berra.  Buhl let two more runners reach base and he was pulled to prevent further damage.  The move paid off because Ernie Johnson came in and got the final out to strand the two baserunners.

The Braves didn’t put their first run on the board until the fifth inning.  Joe Torre hit his second homer of the series and the solo shot cut the Yankees lead in half.  The Braves then tied the game in the seventh inning on Hank Aaron’s third homerun of the World Series.

The tie game was short lived because Ernie Johnson ran out of gas in the bottom of the seventh.  Hank Bauer took him deep to give the Yankees a 3-2 lead which turned out to be the final score.  The Braves put the leadoff man on in the ninth when Eddie Mathews drew a walk but that rally was squashed when Wes Covington hit into a game ending double play.
