Cardinals Edge Braves 4-3

Cardinals 4, Braves 3  (23-16)

Hank Aaron had a part in all three of the Braves runs in their 4-3 loss to the Cardinals.  He tripled, drove in two runs and scored one in the loss.  Bobby Thomson finished with two hits and he drove in a run.

Juan Pizarro took the loss.  He gave up four runs (three earned) on eleven hits and one walk with four strikeouts in nine innings.

Braves Split Doubleheader With Cubs

Braves 5, Cubs 2  (23-14)

The Braves won their third straight game the front end of a double header againt the Cubs.  Ray Crone picked up the win with a nice start.  He gave up two runs on eight hits and two walks with five strikeouts in a complete game.

Bill Bruton hit a solo shot and he scored two runs in the win.  Del Rice hit a two run shot and he was the only Brave with two hits.

Cubs 4, Braves 2  (24-14)

The Braves three game winning streak ended in the second game of a double header with the Cubs.  Taylor Phillips lost his first game of the season and he gave up just one run in 1 2/3 innings.  Red Murff gave up three runs in 3 1/3 innings.

Bobby Thomson hit a solo homerun in the loss.  Danny O’Connell singled and he drove in a run.

Bob Buhl Pitches Braves to Win Over Cubs

Braves 6, Cubs 2  (22-14)

Bob Buhl improved to 3-1 on the season with a nice start against the Reds.  He gave up two runs on four hits and a walk with eight strikeouts in a complete game.

Felix Mantilla went three for four with a run and an RBI.  Bill Bruton had two hits, a run and an RBI while Buhl helped out his own cause by both scoring one and driving in a run.

Warren Spahn Gets Back On Track With Eight Hit Shutout

Warren Spahn had a tough patch the past couple of weeks but he bounced back with an eight hit shutout win over the Reds.  He struck out two and he didn’t walk anyone.

Joe Torre drove home the only run of the game.  He singled home Bobby Thomson in the bottom of the eighth after Thomson just missed a homerun but ended up with a triple.

Hank Aaron Hits Twelth Homerun In Ten Inning Loss

It’s hard to believe that this was a 2-1 game heading into the eighth but both teams put a bunch of runs on the board.  The Reds finally put themselves over the top and they scored five runs off of Ernie Johnson in the tenth inning.

Lew Burdette was okay in his start.  He gave up five runs on seven hits and five walks with six strikeouts in eight innings.

Hank Aaron homered and he drive in two runs in the loss.  Del Crandall hit a two run homer in the ninth inning to send the game into extra frames.

Braves Lose to In Doubleheader Sweep To Cubs

Cubs 7, Braves 5  (20-12)

The Braves lost the front end of their doubleheader to the Cubs with some rough pitching.  Gene Conley dropped to 0-2 and he gave up three runs in just two innings in his start.  Taylor Phillips gave up four runs in five innings of relief.

Chuck Tanner homered and he finished with two runs.  Del Crandall also went yard with a two run shot.

Juan Pizarro was hit hard by the Cubs in the second game of the Braves doubleheader and he dropped to 2-3 on the season. He gave up five runs on six hits and seven walks with eight strikeouts in 8 1/3 innings.

Eddie Mathews hit homerun number eight and he was the only Brave with two hits.  Del Rice hit a solo homerun and that was his first of the season.

Joe Adcock Powers Braves to Win Over Cubs

The Braves came from behind to beat the Cubs 7-6 and Joe Adcock led the way at the plate.  He went three for three with a homerun, two walks, two RBIs and two runs.  Johnny Logan also had a nice game.  He went three for three with a run and an RBI.

Bob Buhl didn’t even get through the second inning but the hitters picked him up.  Ernie Johnson picked up the win. He gave up one run in 3 2/3 innings of relief.

Braves Held To One Run In Loss to Cubs

While Warren Spahn wasn’t lights out, it wasn’t his worst start in the past couple of weeks.  Regardless, he lost his second game of the season and he gave up three runs on six hits and two walks with four strikeouts in five innings.

Joe Adcock doubled and drove in the only run for the Braves.  Eddie Mathews had three hits and he scored the only run.

Braves Edge Phillies In Thirteen Innings

Chuck Tanner hit a solo homerun in the bottom of the thirteenth inning to win this one for the Braves.  Eddie Mathews provided most of the offense prior to that.  He went two for five with his seventh homerun and seven RBIs.

Lew Burdette had a rough start and he gave up three runs on eight hits in five innings but the pen really picked him up.  Ernie Johnson threw four shutout innings and then Bob Buhl and Juan Pizarro each threw two shutout innings to close the game out.

Braves and Phillies Play Rain Shortened Tie

The Braves and Phillies couldn’t finish their game because of the weather and after five full innings, the game ended in a tie.  Gene Conley actually did it all in this one.  He drove in the only run and then he held the Phillies to a run on four hits in five innings.

Red Murff Hit Hard In Loss to Giants

Red Murff gave up three late runs to the Giants and he took the loss in a tough outing.  He gave up five hits and two walks with a strikeout.  Bob Buhl threw seven solid innings in his start but he left with the game tied.  He gave up three runs on five hits and four walks with two strikeouts.

Joe Adcock doubled, scored a run and drove in one in the loss.  Johnny Logan was two for four and he both scored and drove in a run.

Hank Aaron Homers Twice In Braves Win

Braves 6, Pirates 5  (18-9)

Hank Aaron pretty much put the Braves on his back and won this one by himself.  He went three four four with two homeruns, four RBIs and three runs.  Chuck Tanner also had a nice day at the plate.  He went two for two and he drove in a run.

Warren Spahn was hit hard again and he gave up four runs in four innings.  Lew Burdette held the Pirates in check in the final five frames and he picked up the win.  He gave up one run on four hits and he struck out three.

Braves Offense Held In Check Again In Second Straight Loss

Pirates 2, Braves 1  (17-9)

The Braves were held to one run on just seven hits in their 2-1 loss to the Pirates.  Eddie Mathews hit a solo homerun for the only run of the game and even that didn’t come until the bottom of the ninth.

Juan Pizarro had a decent start go to waste.  He gave up two runs on five hits and three walks with five strikeouts in eight innings.

Braves Lose to Brooklyn In Ten Innings

Dodgers 3, Braves 2  (17-8)

The Braves were held to two runs on just two hits in a ten inning loss to the Dodgers.  Frank Torre doubled home both runs in the sixth inning off of Don Drysdale and that’s all the Cards would get the entire game.

Gene Conley got the start and he gave up two runs in 7 1/3 innings.  Lew Burdette threw the final 2 2/3 innings and he gave up the losing run in the tenth.

Bob Buhl Walks Nine In Braves Third Straight Win

Braves 3, Dodgers 2  (17-7)

It wasn’t pretty but the Braves won their third straight behind a shaky game by Bob Buhl.  He only gave up two runs on five hits, but he walked nine in 6 2/3 innings.  The win pushes his record to 2-1 on the season.

Hank Aaron went two for four with a double and a run in the win.  Joe Adcock tripled, drove in a run and scored.

Braves Take Two In Doubleheader Sweep Over Cardinals

The Brves got a nice start from Lew Burdette in the first game of their doubleheader with the Cardinals.  He gave up two runs on six hits and one walk with one strikeout in nine innings. 

Hank Aaron provided most of the offense. He went two for three with a homerun, two RBIs and two runs.  Joe Adcock was three for four and he drove in a run.

Hank Aaron went yard for the ninth time this season as he capped off a great couple of games in the twin billing.  He went two for five with the homerun and he drove in three and scored twice.  Eddie Mathews hit homerun number five and he drove in three runs as well.  Danny O’Connell also had a great game.  He went two for four with three runs and two RBIs.

Red Murff lasted only four innings and he gave up four runs in a tough start.  Taylor Phillips picked up the win with five shutout innings of relief.

Warren Spahn Hit Hard Again In Braves Ten Inning Loss to Cardinals

Warren Spahn gave up seven runs in 6 2/3 innings and while he didn’t take the loss, it was his second tough start in a row.  Ray Crone gave up the winning run in the bottom of the tenth and he took the loss.

Hank Aaron hit homerun number seven and he both scored and drove in two runs.  Johnny Logan was three for five and he drove in a run and scored two.

Braves End Three Game Skid Behind Johnny Logan’s Five RBIs

Johnny Logan had a huge day at the plate in the Braves 10-5 win over the Cardinals. He went four for four with a homerun and five RBIs to almost single handedly provide enough offense to win the game.  Eddie Mathews also had a nice game and he had three hits (including a homerun) and he drove in three while Juan Pizarro homered and he scored three times.

Pizarro picked up the win and he went the distance to improve to 1-1 on the season.  He gave up five runs on nine hits and four walks with five strikeouts.

Braves Lose Third Straight In Pitchers Duel

The Braves were held to one run on seven hits in their 2-1 loss to the Phillies.  Johnny Logan was the only Brave with two hits in the game and he also scored their only run.

Gene Conley had a pretty good start but he dropped to 0-1 on the season. He gave up two runs on five hits and three walks with three strikeouts in six innings of work.

Warren Spahn Hit Hard In First Loss

Warren Spahn lost his first start of the season and he dropped to 4-1 in four tough innings.  He gave up five runs on seven hits and two walks with one strikeout.

Hank Aaron went two for four with a triple, a run and an RBI.  Joe Adcock doubled, drove in two and scored a run.

Braves Lose to Dodgers In Fourteen Innings

Gino Cimoli homered off of reliever Red Murff in the bottom of the fourteenth inning as the Braves lost a long one to the Dodgers  Lew Burdette threw what now an unheard of twelve innings and he gave up four runs on eleven hits and six walks with six strikeouts.

Eddie Mathews had a big day at the plate.  He went four for six with two homeruns, two RBIs and three runs.  Del Crandall was three for six in the loss.

Braves Held to Two Hits In Loss to Pirates

A really nice start by Juan Pizarro was wasted in the Braves 1-0 loss.  He gave up just one run on seven hits and one walk with six strikeouts in seven innings.

The Braves picked up just two hits in the loss.  Hank Aaron was the only Brave to reach base twice with a single and a walk.

Braves Blow Six Run Lead But Win Third Straight Extra Inning Game

Brewers 8, Pirates 7   (12-2)

Gene Conley gave up three runs in the seventh and Taylor Phillips gave up three in the ninth as the Pirates came back from a six run deficit to tie it.  Fortunately, Bobby Thomson singled home Hank Aaron in the eleventh to win it 8-7.  Aaron had a huge game.  He went three for six with his fifth homerun, four RBIs and two runs.  Bobby Thomson finished with two hits and he drove in two runs and scored one.

Red Murff picked up the win with two shutout innings.  Warren Spahn came in to get the final batter out and he picked up his first save of the season.

Hank Aaron Finishes With Five Hits In Braves Ten Inning Win

Lew Burdette gave up three ninth inning runs to blow a three run lead but he still picked up the win because the Braves rallied for three runs in the tenth to win it.  Burdette improved to 3-1 and he gave up five runs on eleven hits and two walks with one strikeout in nine innings.  Red Murff picked up the save with a shutout tenth.

Hank Aaron had a big day at the plate.  He went five for six with two runs.  Eddie Mathews drove in three runs and Danny O’Connell went three for six with a homerun, two RBIs and three runs.

Warren Spahn Improves to 4-0 With Ten Inning Win

Braves 5, Giants 1  (10-2)

The Brewers rallied for four runs in the tenth inning to beat the Giants 5-1.  Warren Spahn was great in his ten inning start. He didn’t give up a run until the ninth and he gave up just eight hits and four walks with four strikeouts to improve to a perfect 4-0.

Frank Torre and Bobby Thomson hit back to back homers in the tenth in the 5-1 win.  Danny O’Connell went two for four with a run.
