Braves 9, Cubs 7 (91-57)
It took the Braves ten innings but they best the Cubs to finish a three game sweep that extended their overall winning streak to six games. Bob Trowbridge gave up four runs in the first inning only to see the Braves come back and tie it with four in the fourth. The Cubs then scored three in the bottom of the fifth while the Braves answered with two in the sixth and one in the ninth to send the game into extra frames. Then Bob Hazle led off the tenth inning with a solo homerun to give the Braves the run they needed to win the game.
Hank Aaron hit homerun number 42 while Hazle was an impressive four for five with two runs and two RBIs. Wes Covington hit a solo homerun for his 21st of the season.
Don McMahon picked up the win with 2 1/3 innings of shutout relief. He walked three batters but helped out his own cause with four strikeouts. Joey Jay got the final two batters out and he picked up his the first save of his career.
The win cut the Braves magic number to just two. A win in any of their next three games against the second place Cardinals would clinch the National League pennant.
