Cardinals 8, Braves 6  (72-44)

The Cardinals handed the Braves their second loss of the series in the front end of a doubleheader.  Bob Buhl pitched to only two batters, both of whom he walked, and from the on, it was left up to the bullpen.  Three different relievers gave up two runs or more and it was Juan Pizarro who took the loss.  He gave up two runs and he was only able to get one batter out.

Eddie Mathews belted a solo homer but it was Bob Hazle was the hitting star.  He went two for four with a homerun, three RBIs and two runs.

The Braves hadn’t lost back to back games in almost a month but they dropped two games in one day as the Cardinals complete a sweep of their doubleheader with the Braves.  The pair of losses cut the Braves lead in the National League to six games and while still comfortable, things were a little more tight as the month of August went past it’s midpoint.

The Braves were held to just four hits and only one hitter reached base twice.  Del Rice was that hitter and he went one for two with a walk.

Bob Trowbridge was hit hard and he fell to 4-4 on the season.  He gave up five runs on nine hits and a walk with two strikeouts in four innings of work.
