Braves 7, Yankees 5
Best of seven Game Series Tied 2-2
In what was the most exciting game of the series to date, the Braves gave up a big lead in the ninth inning only to come back and win it in the tenth inning. Warren Spahn got his second start of the series and he faced Yankees hurler Sturdivant.
The Yankees got on the board early when in the first inning, Gil McDougald singled home Mickey Mantle. It wasn’t until the fourth inning before the Braves finally got their bats going.
Johnny Logan led off the fourth with a walk and he moved to third on Eddie Mathews double. Then Hank Aaron gave the Braves the lead with a huge three run blast, his second homer of the series. Joe Torre followed that up later in the inning with a solo shot to give the Braves a nice 4-1 lead.
Warren Spahn continued to dominate but he finally ran into trouble in the ninth inning. With two men on, Elston Howard took Spahn deep to tie the game up at 4-4. Even worse, Spahn gave up a run in the tenth on a Hank Bauer tripled that scored Tony Kubek.
Nippy Jones led off the tenth by being hit by the pitch. Red Schoendienst moved him over to second base with a bunt before Johnny Logan tied the game up with a double. Eddie Mathews then came through with the game winner and he went yard with a two run shot to end the game.
