Braves 9, Cubs 3 (89-57)
The Braves once again turned on the offense and in the process, they won their fourth straight game to cut their magic number down to just five. Eddie Mathews had two singles, two runs and two RBIs while Wes Covington hit a solo homer, his 20th of the season, in the fourth inning.
Warren Spahn picked up his 20th win of the season with 6 1/3 solid innings. He gave up two runs (one earned) on three hits and four walks with four strikeouts. Don McMahon threw the final 2 2/3 and he gave up just one unearned and struck out six to pick up his eighth save of the season.
